Stormforge is a cel-shaded fantasy survival crafting game for 1-8 players from Roboto Games, set in a procedurally generated world called Sorana that's battered by magical storms. Players are "Stormforged" — braving the storms lets them harvest magical resources and craft weapons, armor, and structures to survive. As of September 2026 the game is pre-Early Access, with a public Steam demo currently live during Steam's PvE Survival Crafting Fest (Aug 31 – Sept 7, 2026).
This page is the plain-English overview: what the game is, what's confirmed, and what's still unknown. Everything here is dated and sourced.
Short version: Roboto Games are shipping a co-op storm-survival crafting game with five classes (three in the demo), 1-8 player online coop plus LAN plus offline, Steam Workshop mod support and a level editor, all in a cel-shaded fantasy world. Early Access is targeted for later in 2026. It's not affiliated with the Stormlight Archive novels despite the coincidental theme.
Who's making it
Roboto Games — VC-backed studio, both developer and publisher, describes itself as a team with 12+ years of game-industry experience. Their design philosophy is stated as "Good Alone, and Great Together," meaning single-player and coop are both intended to be first-class rather than one being an afterthought (Steam FAQ).
The game is not related to Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive despite early press coverage drawing the aesthetic comparison (Massively Overpowered). The Steam page makes no reference to the novels.
The world: Sorana
Sorana is procedurally generated with 100+ points of interest and 3 biomes at Early Access launch: Meadows, a poison-infused Forest, and a Mountain biome planned for post-EA (Stormforge on Steam). The setting includes an "ancient civilization," "island-sized titans," and a mystery around "the source of darkness that causes the storms."
The core enemies are called Squallreavers (Steam FAQ) — a family of creatures spawning inside and around storms.
The five classes
Roboto has confirmed five classes: Warrior, Mage, Ranger, Forager, Villager (Stormforge on Steam). The class system is mix-and-match — players can combine unlocked class abilities rather than being locked to one role. The Steam page cites 100+ skills and 20+ active abilities across the roster.
The current demo includes three of the five — Warrior, Mage, and Ranger (COGconnected). Forager and Villager are not yet playable in public builds. See the full classes overview for what's known about each.
Storms — the defining system
Storms are the game's hook and its highest-signal mechanic. Two confirmed types so far:
- Tornadoes that fling rocks, trees, and enemies into the air — physical hazard players can't tank through (Gematsu).
- Dust storms that reduce visibility and deal gradual damage (Gematsu).
Storms carry powerful resources but spawn deadly Squallreavers, so the design loop is a risk-reward pull: shelter and lose the drops, or push in and try to survive. Roboto describes storms as having "unique mechanics that change how the game is played," which suggests more storm subtypes at EA.
Coop, LAN, and offline
Roboto's coop story is one of Stormforge's clearest selling points:
- 1-8 players online coop (Stormforge on Steam).
- LAN coop confirmed for Early Access, including a LAN checkbox in the UI (Steam FAQ).
- Fully offline play — the game is playable "even if internet servers shut down" (Steam FAQ).
- Self-hosted dedicated servers are confirmed for EA. The server binary hasn't shipped publicly yet (LOW.MS Stormforge hosting preview).
That's a healthier stance than most modern coop launches — no forced online, no per-session server fees, and self-hosting is explicitly supported.
Mods and modding
Roboto has committed to Steam Workshop integration and a level editor, with in-game mod integration so mods don't require separate downloads (Stormforge on Steam). Community-created equipment, enemies, points of interest, and game rules are on the roadmap. This is a first-party modding stance rather than tolerated third-party — closer to Skyrim than Palworld.
Combat
Combat blends melee, ranged, and magical weapons with Souls-adjacent stamina mechanics (Stormforge on Steam). Boss encounters are integrated throughout the world rather than gated behind endgame walls. No PvP has been mentioned in any Roboto material — the game reads as PvE only at launch.
Release timing (as of September 3, 2026)
- Public Steam demo — live during Steam's PvE Survival Crafting Fest, Aug 31 – Sept 7, 2026 (COGconnected).
- July 2026 public playtest — closed, feedback informing EA build (MonsterVine).
- Early Access — targeted for "later in 2026" per the Steam page and press announcements. Roboto has stated EA will run approximately one year before 1.0. An earlier LOW.MS piece cited Q1 2026 which conflicts with everything else on record; the "later in 2026" framing is what Roboto and multiple press outlets have used since April 2026.
- Price: Paid premium game (not free-to-play), price rises expected at 1.0 launch (Steam FAQ).
Windows PC (64-bit) only at Early Access. No console confirmations. 15 languages with full English audio.
